3. FULFILLMENT THROUGH CLEAR THINKING

You work to fulfill yourself. No dilettante are you. You do not expect miracles or help from unknown sources; your help—and you understand this realistically—must come from yourself.

You expect no heavenly intervention in your own behalf; you know very well that no intermediaries on earth will come to bring you everything you need. Other people, too, have their hands full coping with life’s problems.

So, to fulfill yourself, in the many todays which constitute your life, you must bank basically on yourself.

You know this, and while this knowledge may take you out of the realm of fantasy and day-dreaming into the world of reality, you accept this world for it is the world. As a child, you may live with your daydreams and pretend they are real; as an adult, you are through with daydreams.

In this world of reality, in this often difficult world of reality, you bank on yourself—on the strength of your self-image.

And, as we learned, you work to build this key asset of yours—your self-image.

Now we are attempting to build a fine highway, a superb highway, paved with first-class materials, paved with solid materials that will not betray. This highway may or may not lead to New York, to Chicago, to Los Angeles, to St. Louis, to Miami. It will lead to your self-fulfillment, chances are; this is the intended destination of our invisible, but oh-so-real highway.

You are working to strengthen your self-image? Good. Your self-image is your base; without it your highway would lead nowhere at all; it would be merely a dead end.

Now let us move forward resolutely—our goal, self-improvement. Self-improvement leading to self-fulfillment. A worthy aim.

Let us turn to a consideration of clear thinking. For, to fulfill yourself, you must learn this art.

The devout and immovably rigid materialist may see little in clear thinking—except as it relates to his quest for tangible possessions. And yet, how can you possibly fulfill yourself without mastering it? How can you feel peaceful inside when your thinking is muddled?

I am not one to undervalue material things; in truth, I like my comforts and possessions.

Still, one must not overvalue these material products. And an individual may own house, automobile, the most luxurious furniture, and so on, and feel completely unfulfilled—if his thinking is torturous and confused.

And so we will examine the components of clear thinking, spelling them out for you—so that we can move toward mastery of this most important ability.

THE MEANING OF CLEAR THINKING

First, let us delve further into the meaning of clear thinking.

You must realize, at the outset, that thinking is in itself a worthwhile goal, and that when you cultivate in yourself a desire to reach this goal you are already moving constructively because effort represents the launching pad of accomplishment.

For the desire is your take-off point; this desire is your countdown point, and while your countdown will not result in your rocketing off into outer space, it may enrich your examination of inner space, the inner space in your mind, so important to your happiness.

How do you fire up your desire to think clearly and creatively? You repeat and repeat to yourself your realization that, in pushing to fruition your innate need to live the good life and feel happy, the art of thinking is one of your great gifts. If you neglect it, you neglect yourself. Do you, upon awakening, neglect to eat your breakfast? Then do not neglect to work at building your capacity for clear thinking.

Clear thinking means that you define what you are thinking about and focus your attention upon it.

Clear thinking means that you refuse to get caught up in actions without thinking, but that you think clearly first—and then move into action. However, once you are thinking clearly, you can take action, then improvise as you go.

Clear thinking means that you ask yourself intelligent questions and refuse to crush your innate curiosity. You keep your mind open, refuse to rely passively on the thinking of others. You do not relinquish your creative option; it is too precious.

Clear thinking means that you probe for the hidden assets within you, like a miner seeking precious ore to bring out into the world. It means that you refuse to allow your negative feelings to get out of control and, like a malignant growth, eat up the wealthy area of your mind.

Clear thinking means you are on your way toward constructive achievement.

Through this inestimable gift you find that you can play many roles in your mind and then turn these roles into reality goals. For clear thinking is indeed the launching pad for many goals—for the growth of relaxation, of compassion, of the ability to unlock your genuine personality, and of your capacity to withstand and overcome life’s unceasing pressures and problems. Moreover, clear thinking is interlocked and interrelated with your building of a strong self-image.

Your clear thinking is your laboratory. In this laboratory you synthesize raw material into creative thought, then transform this thought into action, in the surehanded knowledge that as you achieve your goals your goals reflect back upon you, enlarging the scope of the confidence inside you, reactivating the functioning of your success mechanism, watering to fruition the proud plants of compassion, humility and self-respect.

Clear thinking implies an understanding not only of your own needs, but of the needs of others. You reach out to comprehend the creative and destructive drives inside yourself and you gear yourself to encourage the constructive drives.

Your clear thinking leads you on to the development of good habits. You work to build up a chain of positive habits that will move toward your reactivating your success mechanism, toward the achievement of mature happiness, toward overcoming life’s pressures and turning them into opportunities for expansion and emotional growth.

As you learn to think clearly and creatively, you become your own judge—not a hanging judge, but a sympathetic judge who will be on your side. You atone for your blunders not by succumbing to the horror of guilt, but by forgiving yourself and rising above them.

Understand this, for to achieve self-fulfillment you must understand this: Creative thinking is the greatest power in the universe. It is the summum bonum of which philosophers have written down through the ages.
